Obituary for Betty Josephine Jennings

Betty Josephine Gillispie Jennings peacefully passed on to heaven at her home on Thursday, April 13, 2017. Her devotion to her family was unprecedented. Memories of her as a wife, mother and grandmother will always live in our hearts. She passed down her love of flowers, birds, travel and decorating to the generations following her.

Waiting for her were her parents, Dallas (Catbird) and Hazel Gillispie and sister, Fay.

She served Lawyer, Paul Whitehead and family for 55 years as legal secretary and assistant. Her hard working devotion to her community organizations will be missed. Betty was the organizing Chapter President of West of the Falls Chapter National Society Colonial Dames Seventeenth Century. Other Clubs include: Village Garden Club, Amherst Junior Woman’s Club, Amherst D.A.R., and Red Hat Society. She held almost every office in these clubs.

She was Valedictorian of her graduating class at Amherst County High School, a former Miss Amherst County, a graduate of Phillips Business College and a member of Amherst Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Gary M. Jennings; daughters: Pam Barger (Doug) and Karen Miller (Donnie); sons: Monty Jennings (Gail) and Derek Jennings (Special Friend, Frank Baugher); grandchildren: Nicholas Jennings(Carrie), Joshua Miller (Allie), Brandon Jennings (Amanda), Lindsay Cannon (Eric), Samantha Miller, Cory Dagenhart (special friend –Jessica) and Troy Miller; great-grandchildren: Logan and Madison Jennings, Kendra and Rylen Miller, Charley Rose and Murphy Claire Cannon, Travis Miller (Rae-Anne); great-great granddaughter, Presleigh Miller.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Monday, April 17, 2017 at Driskill Funeral Chapel, Amherst. Interment will follow in Tudor Hall Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 9:00 pm, Sunday at the funeral home.
