Obituary for Frances Harvey McConaghy

Virginia Frances Harvey McConaghy

Mrs. McConaghy, 91, died Sunday December 10, 2017.

Born December 30, 1925 in Roseland, Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Bland Harvey and Marion Belle Bowles Harvey. Raised in Nelson County, she attended Longwood College where she was a member of the Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority. After a short career teaching in the Bedford schools, she devoted the remainder of her life to being a homemaker and supporting her family. She was an accomplished seamstress, and
got a lot of joy from cooking for her large family. Throughout her life, she enjoyed playing bridge and attending sporting events. She enjoyed spending time with her many friends and family members, especially visits allowing her to dote over her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a long-time member of Amherst Presbyterian Church.

Frances was married for 44 years to John Murray McConaghy who died in 1992. She is survived by her six children and their families; John McConaghy and his wife Deb of Brevard, North Carolina, Margaret Kostal and her husband Richard of Amherst, Thomas McConaghy and Vickie McConaghy, Frances Hill and her husband Dallas of Stuarts Draft, Robert McConaghy and his wife Jannette of Amherst, and Samuel McConaghy and his wife Leigh of Madison Heights. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren.

Frances was predeceased by her sister Marion Louise Harvey Payne of Montebello and
grandson Ryan McConaghy of Madison Heights. She is survived by three sisters and one brother; Mary Elizabeth Harvey DeMallie of Bloomfield, New Jersey, Thomas Bland Harvey, Jr. of Roseland, Dorothy Eugenia Harvey Fink of Laguna Hills, California, and Eleanor Gray Harvey Massie of Roseland. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to our Westminster Canterbury family and their attentive care of our mom. It was so greatly appreciated.

There will be a private graveside service for immediate family members. A memorial service will be held at a later date to celebrate Fran’s life. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Amherst Presbyterian Church Building Fund or to the Amherst Rescue Squad.
