Obituary for James Franklin Bailey

James Franklin Bailey, 92, of Amherst passed away Sunday, June 17, 2018 at his home.

Mr. Bailey was born in Highpoint, NC, May 18, 1926 to the late Paul Dunn Bailey and Mamie Leland Bailey. He was a Geological Survey Engineer and attended Ascension Episcopal Church. He was a member of Winton Country Club, where he loved playing golf with his friends. He enjoyed traveling and conversation, but the primary focus of his life was “Kitten”, his wife of 67 years. His greatest satisfaction was in knowing he had been a good provider for her and their family.

In addition to his wife, Vivian Taylor Bailey, he is survived by two daughters: Susan B. Shimp (John) of Lowesville and Sandra B. Hammersley (Robert) of Manassas; seven grandchildren: Justin Shimp (Olivia), Rebecca Martin (Andrew), Rachel Prewer (Michael), Sarah Sigman (Dean), Nathan Shimp, Erin Lane (Charles) and Caitlin Dryden (Zachary), twelve great-grandchildren and numerous beloved friends including his golf buddies from Winton C.C. and his in-laws.

He was preceded in death by his son, David Bailey.

A graveside funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 am, Saturday, June 23, 2018 in Amherst Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 am at Ascension Episcopal Church.
