Obituary for Richard Clarkson Harvey, Jr.

Richard Clarkson Harvey, Jr., died in Lynchburg, Virginia, on Sunday, May 13, 2018. A native of Lynchburg, he was born March 23, 1933, the son of Richard C. and Irene Mays Harvey. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Evelyn DeJarnette Harvey, in 2005, and daughter, Evelyn Celia Harvey, in 1985.

He is survived by his daughters, Susan Clark Harvey, of Amherst, and Cynthia Elliott Freeman, of Sanford, Florida; granddaughters, Rachel and Elizabeth Freeman, of Florida; one sister and brother-in-law, Jennie Lee and Tom Wilson, of Charlottesville, and their family, son and daughter Tommy and Katherine, and their children; brother-in-law, Lewis E. DeJarnette of Gladys; and multiple generations of cousins.

Clark was educated in the city schools of Lynchburg and was a proud graduate of E.C. Glass. He worked as a contract negotiator with Babcock and Wilcox at Mt. Athos. He and Evelyn moved to Amherst in 1966.

He was a longtime member of Winton Country Club and Amherst Baptist Church, and was a Mason for 64 years. A keen observer of people, Clark will be remembered for his spontaneous and often-piercing wit, his wicked left-handed tennis stroke, and his haste in acknowledging when you were wrong. For many years, he was a much-sought tenor soloist in local churches, with “The Lord’s Prayer” among the most favored selections.

Clark loved interacting with little children. For 25 years, he helped the Amherst Lion’s Club by serving as Santa Claus’s local representative in the annual Amherst Christmas Parade.

The family will receive friends Wednesday night, May 16, between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m., at Winton Country Club. A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 17, at the Amherst Cemetery, with Rev. David Clay officiating.

Driskill Funeral Chapel of Amherst.
