Obituary for Theodore N. Mays

Theodore N. Mays, 86, of Amherst, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2016 at his home.

He was the husband of Ruth W. Mays for over 65 years.

Born in Amherst County, Mr. Mays was the son of the late N. B. and Laura Mays. He was retired from H. K. Porter (Delta Star) and was a member for over 66 years of Ebenezer Baptist Church where he served has Deacon and Trustee. Mr. Mays was an avid fisherman and enjoyed playing guitar and singing. His greatest joy was his family, especially the grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: Teresa Maddox (Don) of Amherst, Carl Mays (Shirley) of Amherst and Ruthie York (Colby, III) of Madison Heights; six grandchildren: Melanie Lamm, Rita Mays, Heather Humphreys, Christina York, Amy York and Colby York IV: seven great-grandchildren: Jesse Lamm, Emily Lamm, Joseph Smith, Michael Smith, Candice Smith, Ayden Moore and Ava Moore; numerous nieces and nephews; his brother-in-law, Ashby Tyree of Madison Heights; and two special friends, Henry Vanhoozier and Buck Mays.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 5 brothers; 4 sisters; and one great grandchild.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 PM, Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016 at Ebenezer Baptist Church with Rev. Dwayne Martin officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
