Obituary for Ruth White Mays

Ruth White Mays, 83, of Amherst, passed away Thursday, April 13, 2017in Lynchburg.

Mrs. Mays was born in Amherst County, the daughter of the late James G. and Louise Margaret Weekly White. She served in the cafeteria at V.E.S. School for many years following her longtime employment as a seamstress with Duti Duds. She was a life-long member of Ebenezer Baptist Church where she served in many ways including as Sunday School Teacher for many years. Mrs. Mays loved reading and cooking, but her real joy was in her family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her children: Teresa Maddox (Don) of Amherst, Carl Mays (Shirley) of Amherst and Ruthie York (Colby, III) of Madison Heights; six grandchildren: Melanie Lamm, Rita Mays, Heather Humphreys, Christina York, Amy York and Colby York IV: ten great-grandchildren: Jesse Lamm, Emily Lamm, Joseph Smith, Michael Smith, Candace Smith, Caitlin Humphreys, Gracie Humphreys, Ayden Moore, Ava Moore and Kairi Robinson; her sister Willie Hayes of Amherst; numerous nieces and nephews; and very special friends, Henry and Bettye Vanhoozier and Buck and Pat Mays.

She was preceded in death by her husband of over 65 years, Theodore N. Mays; three sisters and one brother.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM, Saturday, April 15, 2017 at Ebenezer Baptist Church with Rev. Dwayne Martin officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Family and friends are invited to a covered dish supper following the services.
