Obituary for John Thomas Nash

John Thomas Nash, 88, of Clifford, VA, passed away at his home in the early morning of Monday, July 3, 2017 surrounded by his family.

For almost fifty six years, he was the husband of his loving and devoted wife and caregiver, Patricia Layne Nash; the father of Virginia Nash Zirkle, of Amherst, and her husband, Mike Zirkle at whose table he was most thankful for enjoying many fine meals with his beloved family; father of Thomas Carter Nash, of Charlotte, NC, with whom he enjoyed a life time of working delightfully side by side, and his wife Razida; grandfather of Layne Michael Zirkle, of Emory & Henry College; grandfather of LeeAnne Nash Zirkle, of Amherst; and father of, David Wayne Nash, of Clifford, whom also worked beside his father and who took his Dad on a life-time journey to California to fulfill the dream of stepping into the Pacific Ocean. He was also survived by one sister, Alice Nash Coates of Richmond; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends

He grieved the loss of his infant granddaughter, Brittani Nash Acomb. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Virginia Nash Frye; two brothers-in-law: James M. Frye and James Coates.

John was born on Nov. 25, 1928 in Clifford, to the late John Lewis and Della Everett Nash. He was baptized and confirmed in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Clifford. After graduating from Amherst County High School, he attended UVA, which he left to enlist in the Army. He was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone and served miserably as an MP until he was correctly reclassified as a mechanic in the motor pool, which made him very happy. After his enlistment, he attended VPI, which he left to begin his career in excavating and grading. He developed his fiercesome and fearless pan operating skills in a coal mine in WV. In 1959, he started Nash Excavating and Grading. He graded several streets and subdivision roads in Amherst and around the area; several church properties; many basements and yards; Mt. View Shopping Center, Amherst; and The Centra Medical Facility site at Ambriar Shopping Center, Amherst. He had the pleasure of meeting and knowing many people in his business career.

John was a founding member of Church of the Epiphany, Amherst, VA.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday July 7, 2017 at Church of the Epiphany, Amherst. Interment will follow in Amherst Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until8:00 PM, Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to Church of the Epiphany, Clifford Baptist Church or a charity of your choice.
